Congrats! You have completed your project!

This is the thread where you turn in your project. Here is how you do it. The contact person from your group will post a comment in this thread. It will include four things:
  1. The name of your group.
  2. A brief discussion of what your project is about, this should be based on the description from your google document. Your description should include both the topic, and the sociological concepts that you used, and the types of things that you hope that people learn from your project.
  3. A brief list of the bibliographic references for works that you used and an explanation of how you used them.
  4. The URL that links to what you produced for your project, whether it be YouTube, Flickr, Wikipedia.

Our group project is exploring the culture and values of Ohio University students through a Flickr site. We took pictures of students with something that they value and had them briefly explain why it is they value this particular object. Through this, we learned more about sociological concepts such as culture, how this affects a person's values, and how a person represents what it is they value. We hope that after viewing our Flickr page, people will gain an insight of the type of students attending Ohio University and how diverse the culture at our school really is.

    2. Our project's topic was based on the changing roles that women have had in society. We have taken you through a timeline that shows the advancements that women have been able to achieve over the years. The sociological ideas that we touched on were the ideas of gender inequality and gender vs. sex inequalities. In this video we have given you clips, pictures, and quotes from the worlds past to present. We hope to show how much women have changed through this video but also show that women are still fighting everyday to become completely equal with men, in the workforce, military, and household.

  6. The Fab Five

The idea of our project is based on disasters that have happened and the aftermath that brings people together. We have focused on 9-11, Hurricane Katrina, and the earthquake in Haiti. We have researched the way people work together after something so tragic happens to the society and community around them. There are entire organizations that are based on the aftermath of these disasters. We have found pictures, quotes, statistics, and songs that tie into this topic. Although these events are negative, they have a positive social outcome.

We used a few different websites to find statistics on the three disasters that we focused on and we also used websites to find quotes that related to our topic. Those websites are as follows:

    2. The video conveys how "sex sells" advertisement applies to sociology by addressing some basic sociological ideas and how they apply to the phenomenon of sex being used in advertising. The Looking Glass Self, values, roles, symbols, and memes are a few examples of the terms and concepts we used. Our goal is to show people to what extreme some companies will go to to get you to buy their product, and how unrealistic of an image almost all models in advertisements are.

    2. Our project is about social norms and deviance and how they affect current fashion trends. We also touched on how it is not many individuals shaping society, but society is shaping us based on celebrities and the media. Other concepts we used were sociological imagination, structural functionalism, and primary and secondary groups. We hope that our project solidifies the meaning of groups and norms and that it will encourage our classmates to become more aware of norms and trends that they follow every day.

    2. The group project is exploring conflict theory at an Ohio University Basketball game through Flickr. We took some pictures of the game, from different angles and the actions that were occurring during the game. Then we tied all of these photos back to either conflict theory, resources and secondary groups. By doing this, we learned more about the conflict theory as a whole and how it affects people when it comes to sports. With are Flickr project we want you to learn more about conflict theory and show you how passionate people are when following their sports team.

    2. Our project outlines the body image pressures on men that occur within mass media. We plan to use our video in order to explain the effect of the media's "ideal male body" on men and how comfortable they are with their own image. By using a video, we will look to create a picture of this and hopefully it will more effectively address this issue and at the same time entertain our audience. Men see ads in magazines and on television that portray toughness, “manliness” and the image of a physically fit man. The looking glass theory, regarding the pressure for men to be more “manly” when it comes to body image, discusses how people view themselves as others view them. The stereotype of a “man’s man” is one who is strong and muscular with a toned physique. We know that not all men are built the same, however, the media says they should be. Many men think that that is how they are supposed to look. When people believe they are not what they are supposed to be, they begin to think more and more about what other people think of them. We also touched on the Exchange Theory and how this issue is a win-lose situation. Winning for corporations, losing for those with a negative body image. We hope our video will raise awareness on the matter and help people to see images in the media in a different light and not compare themselves to the unnatural "ideal body" image.

We want to show how the effects of 9/11 relate to how people interacted socially before and after. Using the sociological imagination, we would like to show the class how the outcomes came about through the interactions of different actors in different contexts. The actors are those who came to their rescue, terrorists, families from both affected countries, volunteers, victims. The social context is the tragic situation on ground zero. People were screaming, crying and dying. The institutions involved were the firefighters, the police, and the government to some extent. They worked quickly and efficiently to save those in trouble on 9/11. However, most were unable to be saved. We also want to relate the principal agent theory through the relations between the people rescuing and the resources they needed.

We hope that from our project, people will be able to understand these sociological concepts when applied to our lives.

2.Our project idea is to show dependant our society is on technology. As a group we know how easy it is to contact people with the many forms of technology we have today. Therefore we are going to do the opposite and show how if two people are to meet up and get lost how would they contact each other with no form of technology. We want to show the struggle and the frustration of not being able to find a person without technology. People are so use to just picking up their cell phones and call/texting their friends when they are lost. Without technology how will they find each other?

  19. Relationships and Technology

Technology has played a major role in shaping our society today. However, Facebook and texting have greatly influenced how dating relationships are created and maintained. Networking has made intimate relationships a public display for all, and texting has redefined the social norm for the fundamentals of getting to know one another. Over time "going steady" has shifted more towards texting to get to know one another in the early building blocks of a relationship. After researching statistics and documenting real OU students, we concluded that technology is a major part of relationships in our youth today. Is technology a blessing or a curse for communication? You be the judge....

The original concept of our video was to break social norms by demonstrating collective action through our network ties. However, the idea of collective action failed on many levels (4 to be specific). Given the events we encountered, we reenacted scenes of everything that had gone wrong and we placed each of the scenes into one of four categories: the free rider problem, commitment problems, the tragedy of the commons, and issues with technology. Each of these categories is an issue found in collective action, so instead of showing how collective action can help a group achieve a goal, we are showing people how collective action can cause set backs in a project as well. Thus, "SERG's Inferno: The 4 Levels of Collective Action Hell" was born.

Our project is about the gender roles in our society, and how the prescriptive male and female roles contrast to the proscriptive male and female roles and how we as a society react differently to these. We demonstrated the gender norms for men and women and how we are built into these roles at a young age, and through the media and famous role models. We also demonstrated the proscriptive norms for gender in our society, and how we tend to react negatively to them or not find them attractive. We also showed the difference between acceptance of these deviations in our society compared to others who have created and accepted a third gender. ex. India and the hijra. Our video briefly summarizes all of these observable differences in gender expectations.

    2. We are going to test our labeling theory through a means of questions going hand in hand with the sociological Imagination such as Looking Glass Theory and Social Outcomes. We will interview students on their perceptions of themselves to demonstrate looking glass theory. We will make people think about the different groups that they are in now an how they have changed since highschool. This change as well as the students responses to our questions will help us show the social outcome of labeling and the affects they have on individuals and in essence, the group that they associate themselves with. In order to demonstrate the labeling theory, we will ask people questions about other "types" of people by showing them a picture of someone not like them and receiving a typical response.

2.In our project, we aimed to examine the various, preconceived norms our society has towards dating and the opposite sex, as well as the stereotypes that support them. Through a series of online and paper surveys and questionnaires, we asked numerous college students around campus not only what they looked for in a partner, but also what they believed the opposite sex looked for in their potential partner. By performing this survey, by means of Random Sampling, we were able to study a proportion of individuals, who all had the same probability of inclusion, to represent to larger student-body of Ohio University. Once we gathered our data, we were able to draw some pretty interesting conclusions. Probably, one of the most surprising aspects of the survey was how candid the subjects were in their responses. Though there was an underlying bias, or pre-conceived notion, that those we surveyed would answer in a stereotypical fashion, most likely as a result of their promised anonymity, their answers seemed to be factual, and led to some very interesting findings. Unfortunately, because of the time constraints put on our presentations, we were not able to display all our findings and diverse sets of information in our video. Instead, we decided to include those aspects that were most surprising or come to mind when pondering the subject matter. Overall, the purpose of our project was to analyze the social facts in regards to OU’s dating scene and how they effect one’s “looking glass self.” By gathering data on the preferences and self-expectations of students, we can hypothesize how one’s self image and actions might change as a result of how they believe others perceive them. We can also draw comparative questions, given the data from both sexes, and gain a better perspective on the prescriptive norms of dating and courtship at Ohio University. By drawing on the reflexivity of the findings in this study, we can also observe a potential, future anomie, where these social norms may be broken, if ever such an event occurs.

    2) For our project we conducted a survey about gender roles and the effect the media has had on our relationships. Our video's main theme is chivalry and does it still exist. We used examples from the media (VH1 dating shows, rap music, and movies)and direct quotes from students to support our findings.

    2) Our project is focused on the ways that people break out of cultural conformation. We want to expose the ways that our modern society promotes breaking social norms, specifically the issues facing homosexuals. What kind of cultural doors have been opened during the past few generations? What kinds of cultural doors do we still need to open? We believe that many people take for granted the freedoms they have today. They lack the sociological imagination to perceive how different things could be. The civil rights movement of the 1960's brought about significant change for women and minorities in America, but our nation is still plagued with inequalities. Gender inequality is often thought of as just an issue between straight men and women, but homosexuals are often left out. The truth is that they face just as much, if not more, persecution than straight people, and our society accepts it! Ernest Gaines said it best when he said "Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?" Social norms have changed in the past, but not without work. It is our job as a generation to ensure equality for everyone, even homosexuals.

Marriage is an important part of people’s lives all over the world; however, the ideas and routines associated with one set of people may differ from another. In our project, we plan to create a photo-essay that incorporates important sociological topics/issues and how they relate to different cultures‘ marriage practices. Our main idea for the project is social and cultural concepts of marriage and how they are prevalent in today’s changing societies. This includes social structures, norms, networks, symbols. Through this project, we will analyze ideas such as how networks are affected by marriage, roles of the married, differing symbols of marriage in the world, and many other cultural differences. It also looks how society has changed meeting people through sociological change. We hope people have a better understanding of some of the sociological terms and of what marriage is like in other cultures.

Our references our too long to post on here because we did a Flikr project and they are all internet photos. I sent our TA and Ted an e-mail about it and with our references.

Our project idea is to use Flickr to portray racial and ethnic discrimination as well as how it has improved over time. With the use of images from the past we will work our way towards the future to show how racism has improved as the world has became more connected. We plan on using sociological theories such as Allport's Theory of Contact to explain how this change has occurred. We will describe how social and cultural norms have changed and adapted with time. We will also discuss why new immigrants are so strongly disliked in certain areas of the country than others. Overall, our slideshows of pictures will illustrate how the world has become more connected through contact and we will apply our sociological imagination to prove this.

The format that we chose is Flickr. We feel that Flickr will allow us to present our idea more effectively through the use of pictures and commentary. We also feel that this use of pictures will be the best way to relate our ideas and topics to the audience. We plan on doing this by finding pictures that show how segregated the United State of America used to be during the times of heavy slavery and immigration. We will than show how the country has become increasingly connected through technology and contact. We will use pictures from the internet and also our own pictures to illustrate this idea and prove our theories.

We believe this is very relevant to sociology. This topic deals with how groups have interacted through time. As well as how cultural and structural norms have changed throughout time. We will incorporate the sociological imagination to show how the actors in our societies have interacted which has led to actions which have led to social outcomes that have changed the society that we live into today.

Our URL's and references are posted within the projects details and descriptions since we did our project on Flickr.

    2. Our project is about how gender roles are learned and how they have changed overtime. We created a video that starts with young children demonstrating their knowledge on what is known to be more feminine and what is known to be more masculine. After this we show gender specific toys that also help children learn what are "girly" things and what are "boyish" things according to society. We then show the way society saw women and men's traditional roles back in the day and how societies views on acceptable gender roles has changed over time about women and men. We show this through pictures we found on the internet and sociology terms.

    2. Our project focuses on the progression of women in today's society, mainly in the workforce, and how they have began to "break the glass ceiling." Key sociological terms that are discussed in our project are norms, double standard, glass ceiling, etc. Our project portrays this by its final product: through interviews of our fellow classmates, statistics, media clips, pictures, and appropriate music. I hope that students watch this and understand that women, especially in the fields that aren't extremely popular, are breaking the barriers and getting their voices heard; however, they should still keep in mind that females still haven't reached the same level as men.

In our culture our views of beauty are greatly influenced by the media and what we see everyday; but in other cultures their views on beauty are very different. We decided to pick this topic because we thought it would be interesting to compare and contrast each culture. To be able to show the differences between each in a short amount of time, we will focus on cultures that are very different than ours, such as: African, Chinese, and Indian. We will be focusing on what makes the people attractive in each culture like having small feet in the Asian culture and long necks in the African culture. It is very important to understand other cultures and why their standards of beauty are different.

We wanted to show how the norm had changed over time and people have become more accepting of gay people. The project also depicts how being gay is scientifically proven to be a primary group, or a group that you are born into, rather than a secondary group as some people are lead to believe. The message our group is trying to convey is how popular media has changed over time and helped give a better light for the gay community.

We broke social norms involving three specific sociological ideas. We broke norms involving social roles, conformity, and gender. Through this presentation we hope people learn that sometimes their reactions to certain events or people are not caused by the actions themselves, but instead in part due to their preconceived notions of what behaviors are deemed as norms. People's reactions are sometimes influenced by norms created by society, and then those influences help determine their behavior.

Our project has to do with society and how they are accepting these new norms that rap videos are portraying and how it changing the culture. We are going to incorporate social imagination by explaining how culture is changing for example the TV or even the internet for the publish then filter rather then filter then publish. Most rappers come from the lower class so they use the internet to make it big and are brought up in these situations so that’s what they sing about. Most girls are from the lower class so they don’t have any other options but to be in these degrading videos in hope to make it big. As these videos are also playing on TV the social outcome is that kids are basing their norms off the norms of rap videos.

Our group made a video from onetruemedia. The topic is of teen pregnancy and how it affects social aspects of life. We used stats and pictures to express the separation and the social class that is separated in the conflict of teenage pregnancy. We are focused on How our project has to do with social norms.
Teen pregnancy could be considered breaking social norms as well as culture.
Also the pregnancy has to do with sociology by the networking the pregnancy does. Networking such as blog spots, shows, groups, and organizations.

Our project displays sexual inequality. We use concepts such as social norms, deviance, heterosexuality, homosexuality, stigma, and we use the example of the Matthew Shephard hate crime. We would like people to learn from our project that society needs and should accept everyone for who they are, regardless if some of their actions go against social norms.

Our project was a video we made on onetruemedia.com about social deviance. We used pictures and definitions to show the many different forms deviance and the ways people go about it. Our goal was to show that there are more forms of social deviance other than just being odd. We also hope that people realize that not all social deviance is negative and in fact important for social progress.

    2. The main gist behind the project is to highlight the various racial stereotypes that exists in society. We want people to understand that everyone uses stereotypes to some extent, and that people tend to judge all the time; however, it is best not to form an opinion right away. Furthermore, that it is when people use these stereotypes for things like discrimination that the negative side of stereotyping becomes evident.
The project will be a YouTube video. It will incorporate the concept of social imagination, where society is the social context and the beginning introduces some social actors. For the social action aspect there is a skit based off the conflict perspective, in which tension is created amongst characters, through social interactions (within one big social network), whose daily lives are bombarded with different stereotypes and stigmas associated with various minority, racial and ethnic groups and ascribed statuses. To end the project and show the social outcome there are testimonials from the actors and producers on how stereotypes affect them.

    2) Our project consisted of examining the different types of music throughout each decade. We started from the 1950's and went through the 2000's. We analyzed the types of music trends by studying different pop cultures in the specific decade, and how those types of "norms" affected people and society socially. We then included a variety of different terms and quotes to further our investigation and make it apparent to the class that music has drastically changed our lives. Our group not only talked about the music, but also, we inserted some examples and songs into our video. The insertion of these songs will hopefully give the class a more up close view of how music sounded throughout each decade. The sociological concepts we used were norms, sociological imagination, culture, deviance, conformity, looking glass theory.

    3) We used our notes and our textbook to look up definitions of our terms. Giddens, Anthony, Mitchell Duneier, and Richard P. Appelbaum. Introduction to Sociology. 7th ed. New York: W. W. Norton &, 2009. Print.

Do they use it mostly for the pictures, status's of friends or the facebook chat feature. We are interested in what is so important on facebook that people feel like they must check it all throughtout the day. We are also looking at new words that were made up just for facebook.

    2. For our project we have decided to do a photo essay. Using Flickr we have dual pictures side by side, one showing a social norm, the other showing a breaking of a social norm. We chose this to display many types of social norms, how people follow them and how people break them, make comparisons to our everyday lives and how these “norms” can vary from culture to culture.

Our project covers the topics of social norms and deviance. We are showing how exactly these are/become norms and how people break others. It will be a project that everyone should be able to relate to because they will all be things that people have seen.

We basically took a look back to see how diverse and segregated the world was with different races and then asked around campus to see how they feel campus is segregated and if racism still exists. We also got a chance to see what it was like for someone to come over here without english being their native language.

2)This project started as an investigation about social stereotypes in response to this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr3x_RRJdd4. We wanted to see how different stereotypes affected people's willingness to hug/make contact with each person. However, we soon found that giving free hugs was seen as an act of social deviance. Few people were willing to step outside the social norm. Most of them would only act in such a way after others did it first. We hope that people learn that it's not always bad to step outside the social norm.

The people in our video use Facebook, texting, phone calls, xbox live, online video chat, and more to let all their friends about this great party! Some of these cultures have survived but they are generally located in peripheral countries and more likely have these folk cultures because it's all that resources allow. Voluntary ones (like the Aborigines and Amish) have the ability to change their ways, existing in core countries but generally continue the ways of their parents. Two out of the five members of our group grew up with Amish. Although we respect their views, we've noticed that the younger generations have taken to justifying exceptions to the lack of electronics but still following major guidelines to satisfy their family.

    2. Our project shows how certain behavior is automatically labeled and assumed to be "deviant" even when it is not. To accomplish this, we smoked pipe tobacco out of a pipe in public. Most people assume pipes, rolling papers and other such objects are only used for marijuana which is a deviant behavior. The norm for pipes and other such objects is marijuana smoking and people will react as such. This project shows the sanctions of "marijuana smoking" in todays culture without even smoking marijuana. Also, our project shows the strong presence of labeling on marijuana smoking, even if it is only assumed that individuals are smoking marijuana. The overall goal of this project was to show how society today assumes certain behaviors which are similar to deviant behaviors and against the norm are perceived to be the actual act.

in this project for our class, our group are going to make a project about Ohio university students. The project is going to be about how was the college transition for these college kids when they first got here. What was their first ideas when they saw Athens for the first time. where are they from, are they from small cities like Athens, or from big cities. We are going to ask the college student such kind of question and video tape them.

we will be video taping the student. we are going to use youtude video to submit our project. using youtube is one of the famous tools that almost everybody uses in uploading their videos. one of the reasons in that anyone from the world can see our group video project, so it's going to be cool when everyone in the world will be able to see it. we are going to video tape many student and ask them many different question about their college transition. After we finish taping and revising the video, we are going to upload it to youtube.

Our project is going to be a bout normal students in ohio university. It includes normal society. the project is going to show the sociological imagination. it will show how different pattern and situation. the students' life is shaped by where they live and with whom they live. this is going to have an outcome that depends on the society it self, which we will show in our video and in our project summery when we submit it.

we are going to use this Google scholar about college transition as a website to take some ideas.

    2. Our project showed how tattoos are a form of social deviance. Tattoos are something we see every day and don't necessarily think much of. But, in fact, tattoos are a way for people to express their ideas. They can be virtually anything, and as our slide show depicts, they can be quite detailed. We wanted to show the significance of tattoos in social deviance as well as social conflict. I'm hoping that through our project, people see how tattoos are extremely relevant to the study of sociology, and how they allow people to cross over lines which society dictates.
